Copyright Page

This is an outline of the "DOs and DON'Ts" of using the cartoons and artwork on this site.

Anyone can write and request non-exclusive reproduction rights or display rights on a website for a small fee.

I DO want my work to be seen as widely as possible and I don't wish to unnecessarily obstruct anyone who wants to reproduce them. However, I also wish to protect my rights to commercially exploit my work.

With the statements on this page I, in no way, waive any of my rights with regard to the cartoons/artwork on this site. This page is a set of guidelines to indicate how I am willing to allow my cartoons to be used. If you are in any doubt as far as using my cartoons please email me and I will be happy to clarify the matter.

ATTRIBUTING THE ARTWORK TO ME
If I indicate that my cartoons/artwork should be attributed to me this means that the text "© Peter Mathieson all rights reserved. Website: www.labyrinth.net.au/~toonist" must be included in type of 7 points or larger that contrasts legibly with its background.

DOs

  1. Printing out a copy to display on your office bulletin board, fridge, office partition or any semi-public space for the personal amusement of yourself, your colleagues, family or sundry visitors.
  2. Reproducing the cartoons/artwork in a free, small-circulation (less than 500 copies) newsletter or magazine as long as the artwork is attributed to me (see above) unless the publication incorporates advertising, sponsorship, commercial promotion or any other revenue raising aspects. Then I'll be wanting my royalties please.
  3. Reproducing the cartoons/artwork in a publication with all profits going to a recognized charity (for instance, Amnesty International-YES, Custom golf clubs for left-handed entrepreneurs whose major assets are tied up in the Cayman Islands-NO) as long as the artwork is attributed to me (see above).
  4. Reproducing the cartoons/artwork in printed or electronic form for archival or reference purposes as long as the artwork is attributed to me (see above). As long as copies are not used for commercial access (on a fee paying basis) or access to the general public (unlimited access on the internet). This means if an advertising agency wishes to include them in a database or printed archive of freelance artists or if you are researching a book on subject relevant to one of the cartoons then you may store a copy. If you wish to include the work in an advertisement or published material then royalties and written permission become necessary.

DON'Ts

  1. Printing or displaying the cartoons/artwork for commercial, advertising or promotional purposes without my written permission.
  2. Displaying the cartoons/artwork on a website or any other form of electronic reproduction without my written permission unless for archival or reference purposes (see DOs #4)
  3. Altering, cropping or adding to the cartoons/artwork and/or altering text or captions associated with the cartoons/artwork without written permission.
  4. Creating new works based on the images or words in the cartoons/artworks.
  5. Attributing the cartoons/artwork in whole or part to any other artist or writer.
  6. Anything else that may breach international copyright laws.
