Heavy News.
1st June 2004, 1.35pm
The clever trouserses at NUCA -
the Network of Uncollectable Artists - have made a series of swap
cards featuring the work of various uncollectable Australian artists
(at least I think they're all Australian - I haven't got a full
set of the cards). They were selling them in packs of eight, with
bonus foul-tasting bubblegum (it was supposed to be orange, but
I thought it was more appley), at the Next Wave festival, which
I think is well over by now. I bought three packets at the closing
party for the Matchbox
Artists gig, and among the swapcard booty was the #1 card in
the series: none other than This Is A Heavy Product.
The artists depicted were given
scores from zero to five in various fields, including the danger
involved, the politics, the difficulty of placement and whether
they were done for love or money. The whole thing was then calculated
to give a final score out of 100. The Heavy Product people (whoever
they are) came in at the top, in front of all the other forty-nine
artists, with a whopping 80.38. The scoring system, it has to be
said, is a little vague and open to much dispute, but as we all
know art is not a competition, so duzzenmatta.
Regular visitors to this site might
recognise the images used in the HP card. Here's a clue as
to where you might have seen them before. As a matter of fact,
the Man Bites Dog HP Gallery's
URL was quoted on the back of the card. Way to insinuate yourself
into someone else's deal, Adam.
In other HP news, issue 2 of This
Is a Heavy Product is out now, having changed its name to Stickers
in Your Draw What are They Good For? in order to expand
its scope to include articles about non-HP stickers in its pages.
Issue two also features a review of Man
Bites Dog. They got some of their facts wrong, but they
said really nice things, so that's okay. I'll get around to scanning
it and putting it in the press section soon.
Issue 1 of TIAHP has
been reprinted in full colour, so if you want it or issue 2, you
can send six 50c stamps to PO Box 268, Abbotsford, Victoria, 3067.
That's PO Box 268, Abbotsford, Victoria, 3067.
Don't forget, if you've sighted
a Heavy Product sticker - and now that we know it's an international
phenomenon, that means all of you
- you're always welcome to take a photo and send it in for inclusion
in the HP Gallery. Maybe I'll up the ante and offer some kind of
free gift as additional enticement. How does an exclusive Adam
Ford zine pack sound? Don't answer that. It could be embarrassing.
But crappy as it might be, the offer stands. I ain't no welscher.
And now here's Bill Steamshovel and Miss Jane with some riddles.
