Reviews from Both Sides of the Line.
25th August 2004, 5.36pm
Two small newsy bits today. Shash me, I'm tired.
Those poetry readings last weekend took it right out of me. I've
been in a daze since Sunday morning. But anyway...
First up, my review of the excellent Same
Difference and Other Stories by Derek Kim is up on PopImage.
I really wanted to get this one right, and I think I did okay
this time.
Secondly, I got an email from the publicity kids
at Orion Books and they said that there would be a review in last
Saturday's copy of the Independent. An actual London-based newspaper.
Ooo-er. No prizes for guessing who's been running around Melbourne
for a week trying to find someone who will sell him the 21st of
August edition of the Independent. I finally tracked back-copies
down at the State Library, but Aug 21 isn't due in until Friday.
I'll have a scan of said review, if it exists, up next week. Let's
hope they say nice things and don't go for the easy "what
would an aussie know about writing anyway?" angle.
Scratch that. I just did a search and they've
put it online. I think it's a positive review - the phrase "there's
certainly enough charm in it to elevate it above the banal aggregation
of pop culture references and ironic one-liners it would otherwise
have been" isn't entirely dismissive, is
it?
Hm.
