Post-Mortem.
10th October, 2004
After last night's election I got to thinking
about something that has been buzzing about in my brain for a while
now. Seeing John Howard up there, spouting the meaningless words
he intended to be statesmanlike as he declared a fourth consecutive
coalition victory, kind of galvanised things for me. The confluence
of galvanising and Australian politics seems appropriate somehow,
though I can't really explain why it does.
The conclusion I came to is this: since the re-elected
government's track record shows that that could not give a flying
fuck at a rolling donut about issues to do with preserving the
environment, humane treatment of refugees or indigenous issues,
it's up to those people who think these issues are important to
take it upon themseles to do something about it. In the face of
an electorate-endorsed economically-focused conservative government,
it's time for those who give a shit to get active. Getting active
means first of all getting informed, which means finding some kind
of alternative to the fuckers in the mainstream media who deceive
and ignore and manipulate rather than inform.
So. If you're interested in what I hesitate to
call this "plan of attack", I've cobbled together a bunch
of starting points for finding out more about getting involved
directly.
The list of links below isn't comprehensive -
I'm not coming to this as an authoritative well-informed political
activist or anything. This is just thinking out loud about places
to begin. Any thoughts from you guys would be appreciated.
