Closure.
14th October 2004, 5.35pm

Here's the poem I wrote to perform in the solo round of the Sleepers BAM! Slam two months back. For those who came in late, I was part of a team called "Five is a Four-Lettered Word". We decided to come up with a common scenario that all of our performances on the night would draw from. The scenario we came up with was about two stoner high-school kids who find a talking lavender bush at the Lavandula lavender farm just outside Daylesford, and their attempts to liberate the bush by convincing a hippie bus driver who talks to the invisble ghost of a one-footed astronaut (he calls her "the Space Angel") to drive his biodiesel-fueled bus away from the farm and on to freedom. In the end it is discovered that the bush is actually the astronaut's foot, and the two are reunited. The following is told from Kevin, the bus driver's, perspective.

Flames kiss on the bottom of the pot
The veggie oil begins to heat
Next add 2 parts methanol
Add to this a dash of lye and
That's your basic biodiesel mix

Now here comes the inventive step:
As the steam begins to rise
Carefully stir in half a cup
Of water salvaged from your bong
Now you're cooking something special, man

The tasty popcorn-reefer smell
Of bongwater biodiesel fuel
Tags along behind the bus
Breathe in deep and climb on board
You're riding on the bus to Lavandula

Rudolph Diesel visits my dreams
We swap our favourite recipes
For fuels of the unfossil kind
He tells me that I'll save the earth
From vested interests overdosed on carbon

I tell the Space Angel not to worry
All the problems that we face
Be they fuel or foot related
(Fuel is me and foot is her)
The answer lies in thinking vegetarian

The tasty reefer-popcorn smell
Of bongwater biodiesel fuel
Wafts around the two of us
So climb aboard and breathe in deep
We're riding on the bus to Lavandula
