THE SIXTIES SUPERSTARS CONCERT 22-11-97

I bought myself a ticket for this concert because at the end of the Fabulous Sixties I was still in my very early teens. I thought here's my chance again to see all the big acts that were around during the days of Kommotion, The Go Show and Uptight and being a big fan of towncriersThe Town Criers and Doug Parkinson I thought hey ya better get down there. So after meeting fellow Sixties Appreciation members Grant and Paul off we went.

Thankfully the concert gave all these artists an overdue opportunity to show us their amazing talents. A sight unseen in Melbourne for over twenty five years. As I said being a big fan of The Town Criers having seen their lead singer Barry Smith perform a bit locally in his band The Fabs. The highlight was certainly seeing them perform Everlasting Love. All the acts each performed three songs each. Another highlight was seeing Peter Robinson the former guitarist with The Strangers backing a number of the acts in the backing band. He also performed during the night with The Thunderbirds. Other main acts on the night included the original groopThe Groop I loved their version of Gloria. The Virgil Brothers did a killer version of The Temptations Bout to Get Me. Danny Robinson where's he been the last twenty five years, what a voice. And Doug Parkinson he did Dear Prudence and Without You WOW! Normie Rowe got to perform a few extra songs. He finished off his set with three of the members of his original backing band The Playboys. Other acts on the night included Denise Drysdale, Bev Harrell, Grantlet Dee, Colin Cook, Bobby & Laurie, Johnny Young, Ross D Wylie and Buddy England.

At the end of the concert everyone was invited back to Bobby McGees in Exhibition Street. This gave everyone a chance to mingle with the stars. Grant, Paul and yours truly I reckon got there in record time. After getting in, which is a story in itself but we won't go into it, we got to speak with Normie Rowe, Barry Smith & Sam Dunin (Town Criers), Peter Bruce (The Groop), Peter Robinson, Bobby or Laurie (not sure which one still) - Hey here comes another car Hitch Hiker Hitch, and Gold 104's my station's Gavin Wood.barrysmith The three of us got photos with Normie Rowe and Barry Smith. So what more can I say but thanks to the promoters and performers.

Stay Cool - COOL ROCKIN RONNIE
