LiteShell FAQ

Q: How do I stop the Windows Taskbar from loading?

If you have set LiteShell as your shell, Explorer will load its shell when you open a folder. To stop this behaviour, open the LiteShell Control Panel to the "System" tab and select the "Disable Explorer Shell" option (this is not available when editing the global settings).

Also, if you like to use multiple explorer windows open at once, open an explorer window and select 'Tools | Folder Options' from the menu. Choose the 'View' tab and check the setting labelled "Launch folder windows in a separate process".

Q: What other file managers are available?

Popular ones include:
A43 File Management Utility
ExplorerXP
GXExplorer

Q: Why doesn't the WIN key work?

Under WinXP, the WIN key refuses to work unless explorer is running. I do not know why this happens or how to fix it. Sorry :(

Q: How does !Folder work?

This is best illustrated by an example. Say that you want a menu item called "Videos" that creates a sub-menu which lists the contents of the folder "C:\My Videos". To do this, you would create a file called "Videos!PopupFolder" in your LiteShell menu directory. You would then open this file in notepad, type "C:\My Videos" (without the quotes) and save the file.

Q: How can I have multiple desktops?

Bosskey 2.00 allows you to switch between multiple (virtual) desktops. It can be used with LiteShell, but some extra configuration is required. Open Bosskey's configuration window, and type "LiteShell" into the text-box in the section labeled "Always displays windows...". This will ensure that LiteShell's desktop window is displayed on all virtual desktops.

Q: How can I have a system tray?

TrayModule is a third-party system tray written by Anish Mistry. To the best of my knowledge, it is the best available system tray.

Q: Why isn't the LiteShell menu always focused correctly?

This is a bug in the Windows API. It annoys me, but I cannot find a fix.

Q: What conditions/restrictions apply to the source code?

The source is freely available as a learning aid. Any changes you make must be made available to me (I believe this is compatible with the GPL). Please do not distribute LiteShell without my permission. (I have not yet refused any such requests, so just ask)
