Some women wear looser fitting "bloomers" or men's boxer shorts, which are too loose fitting to hold a pad in place. Some women wear underpants more like tight fitting shorts that have a crotch section too wide to snap a pad around.

Some women want the extra security of a pad that is held against the body more firmly than you might get from regular underpants and pads. For whatever reason, there are women who do prefer belted pads.

A belted pad consists of some type of "belt" part that goes around the waist or hips, which holds up the pad or pad holder. Then there is a section that goes up between the legs - attaching at the back and front to the belt. This section can be an absorbent pad itself, or can be a strip of fabric that would allow you to snap a regular pad around it.

There are styles where the belt is a removable piece and is threaded through tabs/casing in an absorbent pad (Such as "Reddy's" and "Moontimes"), or attached to the pad in some way, such as hooks ("Wemoon" night pad) - so that when the pad is changed, the belt part can be removed and added to a clean pad. If the pad has a folded over end for the tab/casing section, this can be made to have an adjustable length by using buttons, hooks and eyes or other fasteners (as shown in this example of a holder type belted pad).

Or they can be in a style where the belt is attached to, or threaded into (as in the ways mentioned above) a holder (rather than an absorbent pad), which holds the removable absorbent pads like a "Base+insert" style pad. This allows the inserts or pad to be replaced as needed, while leaving the belt and holder on. The holder may contain waterproofing or be of natural fibres such as cotton.

To make one of these styles you will need to make the belt part. Perhaps something like cotton twill tape that can tie up around you. Or use elastic for a stretchy fit. Then measure the length between your legs from where you would have the belt (on the hip or at the waist), and that's how long you need that strip to be.

If you want something a bit more like underpants, I have come up with a design for making a pad belt using nothing but an old bra! This could be used to hold any normal pad - just use the belt like underwear and snap a pad into the crotch area.

Click here to see the "pad belt from a bra" tutorial

Sellers of belted cloth pads:

http://www.reddyspads.com (Online store closed, only taking phone orders)

http://www.moontimes.co.uk/belted-pads

https://www.wemoon.com.au/index.php?action=show&page=category&categoryId=5

http://amysragbag.com (While they don't advertise belted pads, I was a tester for one, so she may make them by request)
DIY Belted pads instructions:

Click here to see the "pad belt from a bra" tutorial

An article on making a belted pad (without pics)

Pictures of belted cloth pads

http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/rags/homemade_napkins.php

http://www.mum.org/chinpads.htm

http://www.mum.org/indiapd3.htm

http://www.mum.org/panhomja.htm

http://www.mum.org/pelvipad.htm

www.ecomenses.com/www.clothpads.org (C) Obsidian 2002-2010.
