Writing a Sabbat Ritual

To write a Sabbat ritual, start with a basic ritual and work around that.

First you cast the Circle, and then you can do any Sabbat celebrations, then any spells you wish to perform and raising the cone of power (if you wish), observe a simple feast, then dissolve the Circle.

I like to do any Sabbat celebrations before any spells because if you raise power you need to ground the energy afterwards.  To do this you can simply place your palms and forehead on the ground and release any excess energy into the ground.  The simple feast (also called Cakes and Ale) is partly as a celebration, and partly because eating something will also help to ground you.  So it makes the ritual flow better (In my opinion) to have the Sabbat part first, then any spells, then the raising of the power, and then the Simple feast.

The Sabbat correspondences can help you to design your ritual for the Sabbats.  For example, A Winter Solstice ritual might go something like this:

  • Set up an Altar with a green or red cloth.  Have holly, oak etc. on the Altar.
  • Burn incense made from Yule plants (Such as Frankincense, Rosemary and Cedar).
  • Have a small Pine tree in a pot in the centre of the Circle.
  • Wear jewellery made from the crystals for Yule, or place them on the Altar.
  • Wear clothing or robes in the Yule colours.
  • During the ritual decorate the tree with Pagan symbols, you can make these from clay, or add herbs and crystals in little bags, small fruits etc.
  • Use the Planetary/Elemental correspondences for any spells you wish to perform.
  • In the Simple feast, eat foods for the Season, Have a hearty stew or roast.  You can have the feast after the ritual if you wanted to have a big feast.  But remember to leave some for the Goddess and God like you would in a simple feast.  You could also have a very small simple feast, and then have a large feast outside the circle.
After you have worked out what you will do, it is time to work out how you can make them into a flowing ritual.  Work out how you can write the ritual so that you can include all the symbols you wish to use.  Will you have words in the ritual?  Work out what you want to say, and then work out how you can say that in a rhyme, or a flowing verse.

There is nothing wrong with doing simple celebrations either.  Like for the Autumn Equinox simply taking a walk through a park and gather (or just look at) Autumn leaves.

For Litha you could have a family BBQ or organise a trip to the beach.

Some pagans choose to not celebrate the Sabbats, but acknowledge that they exist, and might simply think about the changing season on that day, or something simple like that.  Some Pagans only celebrate some of the Sabbats, like the Solstices and Equinoxes only.  Some choose the “cross quarter” Sabbats, being Samhain, Beltane, Imbolc and Lammas.  The choice is yours.
