Over the past four years the Turloughmore Heritage Project (THP) was working on the publication of a local history of the parish of Lackagh,Turloughmore. The book, entitled "In their Own Words: The Parish of Lackagh-Turloughmore and its People" was published in association with FÁS and the Lackagh Museum Committee. Many different sources were researched as part of this, but particular attention was paid to folklore and newspaper material. The areas covered in the book include early modern Ireland with particular reference to the early 16th century and Modern Ireland, with special attention being paid to the social history of Lackagh in the 19th and 20th centuries.
In researching this parish history 115 men and women from the locality gave interviews. The group was self selected with ages ranging from people in their thirties to people in their nineties. Local women working with the project as trainee/researchers visited homes and collected interviews. The interviews, though conducted under a number of headings, were loosely structured and open-ended. The purpose of this was to invite people to tell of their own experiences in their own words. This captures how people experienced their own lives, what they themselves considered to be important and worth remembering. By doing this, the THP hoped to deal with those elements, which are missing from mainstream history. The THP was not just reliant on these present-day interviews either. The material gathered by Schools Folklore Project of the 1930s, and by Ciarán Bairéad as part of the Irish Folklore Commission collection in the '50s, '60s and '70s was examined. These likewise proved to be an invaluable source for the THP. There are 14 chapters in all in the book:
